Weight Watchers is a diet program with millions of members in over 30 different countries around the world.

It was founded by Jean Nidetch, a Brooklyn homemaker, in 1963. Nidetch and a group of friends in Queens, NY, started meeting once a week to talk about how to lose weight.

Today, Weight Watchers is an international company and the largest commercial weight loss program in the United States (U.S.). Approved by many physicians, it is available in various settings, from the local community to the workplace and online.

The program includes regular meetings, self-help type learning sessions, group support, and a points system. The dieter aims for a target weight or a body mass index (BMI) of between 20 and 25, considered the ideal range.

Anyone can join Weight Watchers, as long as they are at least 5 pounds (lb), or 2.3 kilograms (kg), over the minimum weight for their height.

Busy people who cannot attend meetings can sign up to the online community.

Coaching

Apart from group meetings, Weight Watchers offers one-on-one coaching and a personalized action plan. A personal coach can help the individual make a plan that suits their lifestyle and routine.

Members can communicate with their coach by email, text, or phone.

Weight Watchers dieters are not restricted to specific foods or activities. Instead, they use a point system to monitor themselves on a daily basis. This makes them accountable for their weight loss activities each day. Members can record smart points on their mobile device.

The point system helps people lose weight over the long term.

Points depend on fat, sugar, and protein. The higher the protein content, the lower the points gained. The higher the fat and sugar content, the more points that food has, and the less you can eat.

The points encourage members to change their dietary habits, to eat more fruit, vegetable, and lean protein, and less fatty, sugary food.

Here is an example:

an egg is worth 2 points
two tablespoons of low-fat cheddar cheese are worth 1 point
chopped tomatoes, onion and fresh herbs are worth 0 points
one tablespoon of olive oil is worth 1 point

A person who eats a 2-egg cheese omelet fried with olive oil and sprinkled with tomato, onion and herbs uses up 4 points. If their target for the day is 30 points, they now have 26 points left.

A person will aim to achieve within a certain range of points, depending on how heavy they are and how much weight they need to lose.

A person who weighs 150 pounds, for example, will aim to gain 18 to 23 points a day. Someone who weighs over 350 pounds may aim to collect between 32 and 37 points in a day.

Members also can gain "Fit points" for activities such as cleaning, walking, or gardening.

An etool can be used to record the points digitally.

Each person has their own daily and weekly target points to meet in their own way, but within the limits agreed.

Members who keep within a certain weight range during the Maintenance period do not pay to attend meetings.

After an initial weight loss period, members can reach their target weight. At this point, they enter a maintenance period. Their daily allowance increases by 6 points, but they continue to track their food intake and activity levels.

For 6 weeks, they gradually increase their food intake until they are neither losing nor gaining weight.

During these 6 weeks, there are regular weigh-ins. If a member manages to stay within 2 pounds, or 0.91 kg of their target weight during the 6-week period, they then become a "Lifetime Member."

Lifetime Members can attend any Weight Watchers meeting free of charge as long as they weigh in once every month, and do not stray from their target weight by more than 2 pounds or 0.91 kg.

Lifetime members who drift from their weight target range have to pay weekly for meetings. They can then recover their Lifetime membership by going through the process again.

Findings published in The Lancet in 2011 suggested that patients who were referred by their doctors to Weight Watchers lost about twice as much weight as those on standard weight loss care over a 12-month period.

The researchers concluded:

"Referral by a primary health-care professional to a commercial weight loss programme that provides regular weighing, advice about diet and physical activity, motivation, and group support can offer a clinically useful early intervention for weight management in overweight and obese people that can be delivered at large scale."

Another study, published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, found that adults who attended at least 2 in every 3 Weight Watchers sessions for 6-months significantly reduced their fasting glucose and insulin levels, as well as losing weight.

In 2011, researchers described Weight Watchers as a "useful first line weight loss intervention" for the United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) to refer patients to if they needed and wanted to lose weight.

A review of 45 studies, published in 2015 in Annals of Internal Medicine, suggests that Weight Watchers may be a suitable program for physicians to recommend to patients who wish to lose weight.

Anyone who is considering a radical change to their diet should discuss plans with their physician first.

Dieters can either join a Weight Watchers program online or in person, and they can opt for meetings only, or they can add an online option, individual coaching, or both. Attending meetings is recommended.

What Are the Best Paint Colors to Use in a Kitchen?

For many people, the kitchen is the heart of the home. It's where you start your busy day and where you unwind with a good meal — and maybe a glass of wine — in the evening. So, obviously your kitchen is a very special room, which means it deserves some very special consideration when it's time for an upgrade. Choosing the perfect paint color is an ideal starting point — and an important one. While you can obviously select any color you want for your kitchen, HGTV recommends white, gray, blue, green, yellow or red. Let's take a look at why each color works so well in the most important room in the house.

White

According to HGTV, a white kitchen feels clean, fresh and energizing . The bright look can help wake you up in the morning when the sun starts shining on the white paint, but the neutral color also offers a number of other benefits. First, the color is extremely versatile as part of a color scheme. You can paint your cabinets and other accents almost any color when you have a white backdrop. A white kitchen can also open up a small space , making it feel larger, and it can brighten a dark room that doesn't see much natural light.

Finally, white not only feels clean, but it's easy to see when the walls are dirty, so you can keep the room where you prepare all your food as sanitary as possible. Just don't make the mistake of assuming white is a one-size-fits-all color. You can customize your kitchen even further by choosing a shade of white that has red, yellow, green, blue or other color undertones to warm up or cool down your space.

Red

You may have noticed that many of your favorite restaurants use red paint as part of their decor. That's because this warm color is believed to stimulate the appetite. Cooking is also the color of passion . For this reason, many feel that it's also a wonderful color to paint their own kitchens.

Not only does red make a good wall color, but it also pairs well with more neutral colors, like white and gray, which is important if you want to paint your cabinets and other fixtures red. The vibrant color also comes in many shades. For a sleek look, consider a semi-gloss candy apple red, or for a more rustic look, choose a shade of red that has some hints of orange mixed in with it.

Blue or Green

Blue and green are both tranquil, calming colors that are frequently found in nature. Both are good choices for painting a kitchen, especially if your kitchen is a place where you like to relax and spend your downtime. Like red, green and blue come in a variety of shades that you can use as accent colors for your walls, cabinets and other fixtures.

Keep in mind that darker shades of blue can overpower a room very easily, but they look good in a kitchen with white fixtures. Lighter blues can soften your kitchen and make it feel brighter and bigger. Green shades tend to look good with natural wood cabinets and fixtures.

Yellow

Yellow kitchens tend to feel happy, cheerful and sunny, and according to Real Simple, homes with yellow kitchens even sell for higher prices than those with other colors. The warm color is versatile enough to use in a rustic cottage as well as an industrial condo, and it can really create some excitement in an otherwise boring space.

Like red, yellow sees a lot of action in restaurants. These businesses often use yellow because the color is thought to stimulate the appetite and increase the amount of serotonin — the hormone that makes you feel euphoric — in your body.

Gray

If you're bored with white but still want a neutral color, HGTV recommends searching for an appealing shade of gray. Like white, gray pairs well with other colors, allowing you to get creative with cabinets, counters and other fixtures. Besides being one of the most versatile colors you can paint your kitchen, gray can help you bring together various textures, create a clean look and reduce shine and glare on your surfaces.

What's in a sheen? Why does it matter? Today, Jeff and Kaitlyn at Amsberry's Painting are here to tell you all about it. Introducing our new series: Paint Talk – where we answer YOUR paint and stain related questions.

When doing any kind of painting on our home, the first question, naturally, is one of color. Once you've made all your decisions surrounding accent walls and trim, it's time to consider sheen. In fact, the sheens that you choose for your colors can be just as important as the colors themselves.

Just as every color serves a purpose (white for the cabinets, yellow for the bathroom, red for the front door, navy blue for the accent wall), every sheen serves a purpose. Paint stores make a myriad of sheens available not because they want to confuse the customer, but because the needs of every home are unique and dynamic. In order to meet those needs, sheens need to be dynamic and varied as well.

What is Sheen and What is it's Purpose?

Let's start off by defining what sheen is. Sheen comes from the word "shine". It designates the level of glare that a product will put on your wall. Ultimately, the purpose of sheen is twofold: it has an aesthetic component and a durability component. The key to choosing a sheen lies in the combination of those two factors. Some sheens make your walls easier to clean than others, many are great at hiding imperfections in the walls on a long term basis. Every sheen serves a purpose that stretches beyond interior design, and it is very important to take the factors and uses of your home into consideration when making your final choices.

Sheen Options

Every paint store has their own range of sheens and different names for sheens, which can seem daunting. To simplify, sheens can be sorted into four main categories: flat, low sheen, satin, and semi-gloss.

Every sheen has a different percentage of glare level. Our four main categories and their glare percentages are as follows:

Flat: less than 3% glare

Low Sheen: 3-19% glare

Satin: 20-30% glare

Semi-Gloss: 30-45% glare

Selecting a Sheen

Things to Consider

A key consideration when selecting a sheen are the characteristics of different sheens. Flat sheens are not washable because they soak in moisture, while higher sheens repel moisture and can be wiped down. Flat sheens hide imperfections, whereas higher gloss shows the imperfections because light reflects off the sheen.

Another thing to consider is your lifestyle. Do you have young children? Large pets? If you have lots of activity going on in your home, you'll want to go with a higher sheen, such as satin or low-sheen. Sheens like these repel moisture and are therefore durable and easy to wipe clean when spaghetti gets flung onto the wall by a tantrum-throwing toddler. Flat and Low-Sheen are more subject to marring or barnishing in the paint, just because the sheen makes the color less durable. If the wall suffers impact or needs to be scrubbed clean, it will usually be barnished in some way as a result. However, if your home is a quiet space with adult children and small pets, you might appreciate a lower sheen finish. A low-sheen or flat sheen can be very pleasing to the eye because it creates a nice matte look due to its low shine level.

Sheen Suggestion Breakdown

Bathroom (with shower): Satin or Semi-Gloss is suggested due to the high level of moisture. A higher sheen level is easy to wipe clean and interacts well with high-moisture environments.

Bathroom (without shower): We suggest Satin here because there is some moisture, but less than in a bathroom with a shower. Satin is a happy medium for a bathroom that has less exposure to moisture.

Kitchen: Satin or Semi-Gloss is recommended because higher sheens are more washable.

Kid Bedroom:We recommend Satin or Semi-Gloss here because in a busy environment, paint needs to be washable and durable. Satin and Semi-Gloss are both.

Main Spaces: The sheen that you use in your main spaces is dictated by the general use of your entire house. Low-Sheen or Satin are great if you have kids and/or large pets, Flat or Low Sheen are both great options if you have small pets and adults residing in your home.

Ceilings: We advise a Flat sheen for all the ceilings in your home except for the bathroom. The ceiling is far enough away from any natural chaos that you won't need to worry about cleaning it, and it helps counteract any possibility of your walls seeming too shiny.

Dark Colors:With dark colors we generally avoid Flat sheens because a darker color is more subject to barnishing or marring. Having some sheen eliminates this problem.

Millwork:Satin provides a harder, more protective finish. It also creates a nice contrast, particularly against flat walls and ceilings. Trim, windowsills, and cabinets, for instance, look fantastic with a high gloss sheen. This is especially prominent when contrasted with a lower gloss sheen on the walls. You'll see Satin used a lot on accent pieces in a room, as well as on furniture.

What's Next?

As we've discussed, the place to start when considering which sheen to choose is your lifestyle. The more children and pets you have running around, the higher sheen you should use. If you have a quieter home, you can opt for a more aesthetically pleasing sheen like flat or low sheen. Due to the moisture resistant qualities and washability of higher sheens, bathrooms and kitchens should be painted with Satin or Semi-Gloss paint.
